My POW boxcart photo published in WWII memoir, The Secret POW Diary of Walter J. Hinkle plays a crucial role in bringing history to life. Author N. Forrest Pollard reached out to use my image that I took at the Capas National Shrine in Tarlac to depict the infamous boxcars that transported prisoners during the Bataan Death March.
Photo Published in WWII Memoir
During World War II, boxcars were used to transport Filipino and American prisoners of war from San Fernando, Pampanga, to Capas, Tarlac. These freight cars were overcrowded, non-ventilated, and unbearably hot, leading to extreme suffering and deaths during the journey. With no food or water, many POWs died en route, earning these trains the grim nickname “Hell Train.” Upon arriving in Capas, the survivors endured a further march to Camp O’Donnell, a brutal POW camp.
The image I took of the POW boxcar was installed within the shrine grounds as a stark reminder of the actual size of these train cars used.
How My Photo Became Part of the Book
N. Forrest Pollard contacted me while working on his memoir based on Walter J. Hinkle’s wartime diary. He wanted an accurate representation of the boxcars used during the Bataan Death March, and my photo provided the exact visual he needed. The memoir recounts Hinkle’s experience as a POW, offering readers a raw and personal perspective on the horrors of war. The book was published by Schiffer Publishing in 2022.
