citizenM Taipei Northgate, a chic design boutique hotel

citizenM Taipei Northgate

I can’t help but gush over the beautiful and interesting interior of citizenM Taipei Northgate. While the ground floor is unassuming, it’s the second floor that amazes. And the different guest rooms are impressive too.

citizenM design boutique hotels is a Netherlands based chain known for its unique interiors. It first opened in 2008 near the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Over the years, several properties in major cities around the world have been built. The citizenM Taipei Northgate is the 11th and their first foray in Asia. This boutique hotel is known for its unique design approach to its properties with works by local artists incorporated in the interior.

The entire second floor of the citizenM Taipei Northgate building is one longitudinal strip. The dining area is at one end. The buffet area and the bar are in the middle. The lounging area at the opposite end has a living room ambience where you can relax or entertain or just hang out. The colors, the lamps’s different shapes, the varied Vitra furniture, the decors… I can go on and on. It’s an amazing work in this city.

Taipei experience

I first saw this hotel while searching for accommodations online for my trip to Taipei. What characterizes citizenM is that there is just one design for the rooms but are comfortable with wide windows for amazing views. In suite controls are done with an Ipad Mini. It’s other characteristic is the interestingly designed lobby that is hip and chic. Buffet breakfasts are served and there’s canteenM, a 24 hour canteen/bar. Check stay experience in my travel blog at Langyaw.

A well appointed location

For this Asian branch, this designer boutique hotel in Taipei is well appointed. It is just near the Taipei Main Station and Ximending is just a short walk away. There are lots of small restaurants and coffeeshops as well as street food around the vicinity. It’s also close to an MRT station. You can even walk to the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial and 228 Peace Park.

Its mainly targeted for the millennial crowd for its highly Instagrammable interiors and rooms. For a design enthusiast and architecture photographer like me, it’s indeed a great find.

Chaho Now Cafe’s beautiful modern interior woodwork

Chaho Now Bangkok interior woodwork

Chaho Now is a modern tea cafe specializing in matcha from Japan. Established in 2005, it has branches around Bangkok. This one with the beautiful interior woodwork featured here is their Silom branch.

I just came from having coffee from one of the stalls in Silom Complex when, for a moment, my gaze was stopped at the Chaho Now tea cafe beside me. The interesting interiors caught my attention with its simple but modern interior woodwork. A close inspection reveals a texturized and uneven surface that add to its appeal.

It was like a 3D mesh rendering of a surface with all these triangular forms. I love the way the interior woodworks’ walls and ceiling seem to play with the light and its overall good vibe. Unfortunately, the shop’s workspace is a bit cluttered and distracts from the interesting design.

Avant Offices, a modern coworking space in Cebu

Coworking space in Cebu

This coworking space in Cebu is probably the best designed in the city. Located at the fourth floor of Avenir Building. It is just several meters from the Waterfront Hotel and Casino. Cebu City is the second biggest city in the Philippines. And just next to the National Capital Region which is Metro Manila. As such, it’s the center of business in this part of the country while Cebu province itself is a top tourist destination.

Avant Offices is one of those trendy companies catering to the modern worker. As a coworking hub, ideal for freelancers, it has open seating or dedicated workstations. It has office spaces for small companies or teams with fully furnished, IT enabled work areas including broadband internet access. Catering also to startups, it offers virtual offices. Like most spaces, there’s free flowing coffee, tea and water at the pantry.

The interior design is modern and minimalist. It has great ambiance that enhances the overall atmosphere in a 200 sq meter area. The space is bright with floor to ceiling windows. The series of semi opaque blinds running the length of the glass walls diffuse the outside light. Floors are carpeted in subdued colors. The efficient use of wood in the paneling, flooring and ceiling adds to the organic touch. The curves and forms provide an interesting visual counterpoint. The seats and lounging couches are comfortable too.

A glass walled area serves as a mini conference room at one end while the gorgeous round pantry at the opposite end balances the layout. Overall, you have this well thought interior and a great lounging area that will surely positively impact one’s productivity. This coworking space in Cebu is also close to IT Park, an important business hub in the city.
